While a lucky player in Massachusetts won the $31 million jackpot in Tuesday night's Mega Millions drawing, the Powerball climbed to a whopping $653 million following Monday night's drawing without a jackpot winner.

WCVB 5 reported that a lucky ticket sold in Massachusetts matched all six balls in Tuesday night's Mega Millions drawing to win the $31 million jackpot. The multi-million dollar jackpot winner reportedly purchased the Mega Millions ticket at a gas station in Woburn, Massachusetts.

The winner could choose the $16.5 million cash option. The lucky numbers from the Tuesday night drawing are 7, 9, 18, 29, and 39, with Mega Ball 13. The Megaplier option was 4x. Aside from the jackpot winner, a Mega Millions ticket sold in New Jersey won $4 million after matching all five white balls with the Megaplier.

This has been the second time in recent weeks that the Mega Millions jackpot has been won in the same state and the fourth time the top prize was won in January, according to Northjersey. A player in Belchertown, Massachusetts, won a $33 million Mega Millions jackpot on January 24.

The jackpot will now reset to its fresh starting point of $20 million for Friday night's drawing. The top prize reportedly carries a cash option worth $10.6 million.

Powerball Climbs to $653 Million

With no top prize winner on Monday night's drawing, the Powerball jackpot climbed to a whopping $653 million. Fox Business reported that the cash option value is $350.3 million. Monday night's Powerball winning numbers were 1, 4, 12, 36, and 49, with the red Powerball 5. The Power Play was 2X.

The Powerball jackpot was last won on November 19, when a ticket in Kansas matched all six balls, winning a $92.9 million jackpot. Since then, Powerball has had 30 drawings in a row without a jackpot winner.

Last year, seven Powerball jackpots were reportedly won, including the world record $2.04 billion jackpot won by a single ticket in California last November 7. The lucky winner in Altadena, California, correctly matched all six numbers to win the Powerball jackpot. The lottery player's identity currently remains a mystery.

California Lottery Warns Mega Millions and Powerball Players Not to Buy Tickets Online

The California Lottery has warned Mega Millions and Powerball players in the state not to buy tickets online or via a digital app, as these tickets are not eligible to win, NBC Los Angeles reported.

Carolyn Becker, a spokeswoman for the California Lottery, told the outlet that online lottery ticket sales are not regulated in the Golden State, "so there is simply no oversight." Becker noted that online lottery tickets are not authorized, and paying this prize is prohibited.

"We would be prohibited from knowingly paying a prize on any ticket purchased through a third-party digital service because the player would not meet the legal definition of 'winner'."

According to the California Lottery, Mega Millions and Powerball players can legally purchase their tickets for any draw in more than 23,000 retail stores in the state, especially when the jackpot climbs into the hundreds of millions.

Mega Millions drawings are every Tuesday and Friday at 8 p.m. California time, while the Powerball draw is every Monday and Wednesday at 7:59 p.m.
