The director of "Joker: Folie à Deux," Todd Phillips, posted the first photo of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn on Instagram on Valentine's Day.

"Joker," released in 2019, made $1 billion and earned star Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar for best actor. Lady Gaga is believed to be playing DC mainstay Harley Quinn in the film's sequel. According to Hollywood Reporter, Phillips, who wrote the upcoming film with Scott Silver, will direct the movie again.

Phillips had previously offered glimpses of Phoenix throughout the first "Joker," and he continued this practice when he announced the start of filming for its sequel on Instagram on December 10 with a picture of his leading man.

Warner Bros. set October 4, 2024, as the release date of "Joker: Folie à Deux," and production has already begun in New York and Los Angeles to prepare for the release. Before this, Gaga and Phillips had collaborated on the film "A Star Is Born," which Phillips produced.

Despite its R rating, the original "Joker" film was a huge success, becoming one of the highest-grossing DC movies of all time. It was about Arthur Fleck, who wanted to be a stand-up comedian and clown. He kept getting turned down, which worsened his mental health problems.

In the end, he adopts the Joker identity and achieves legendary status. Folie à Deux is a reference to the medical word for a disorder of the mind that affects multiple persons at once, usually members of the same family.

Margot Robbie's Take on Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn

Lady Gaga received positive vibes from Margot Robbie, who has played the evil Harley Quinn in films like "The Suicide Squad" and "Birds of Prey," Deadline reported.

"It makes me so happy because I said from the very beginning, all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, the way like Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor," Robbie told MTV News in October 2022.

Robbie said it was such an honor to have established a solid foundation for Harley Quinn to be one of the characters that other actors get to try out for.

"I think she'll do something incredible with it," the actress noted.

Lady Gaga Announced Last Year She'll be in 'Joker' Sequel But Did Not Confirm the Character

In August, Lady Gaga made an official announcement on social media about her participation in the "Joker" sequel, sharing the title and the release date of October 4, 2024, IGN reported.

Though the announcement did not specify her role, the accompanying teaser film showed her and Joaquin Phoenix dancing in a black and red silhouette (with a heart on Lady Gaga's cheek), leading many to believe she will play Harley Quinn.

There were also rumors that "Joker: Folie à Deux" will be a musical, which would be a massive shift from the dark tone of the original film.

The teasing comes after James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed their original plan for a reimagined DC Universe, Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, last month. However, Phillips' interpretation of the Joker predates their concept and Matt Reeves' "Batman" trilogy.
