During a surprise visit to Poland near the Ukraine border, Prince William thanked British and Polish troops for "defending our freedoms," and Russia mocked him.

According to the Daily Mail, the Prince of Wales on Wednesday visited the base in Rzeszow city, about an hour from Ukraine, and spoke to troops, telling them that "everyone back home thoroughly supports you."

The troops are part of the first line of defense against Russia's war on NATO's eastern flank.

In response to the visit, Maria Vladimirovna Zakharova, the director of the information and press department of Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, belittled the prince's royal title to merely "son of Charles," The Sun reported.

She also cited the depleted uranium tank shells Britain supplied to Ukraine.

"I wonder if William Charles-ovich brought depleted uranium ammunition for his troops," Zakharova said.

Prince William Visits British Troops Fighting Russia in Poland

Sources close to Prince William reportedly said his trip to Rzeszow city in Poland was a "personal mission" to recognize and thank the soldiers, largely consisting of the Royal Artillery Regiment.

During his trip, which had been kept in secret for security reasons, the Prince of Wales managed to get an up-close look at Britain's high-tech Sky Sabre missile defense system deployed near the border.

As he spoke to British troops without a script, the prince said: "I know how busy you all are. Thank you for hosting me today, I just wanted to come here in person to say thank you for all that you are doing, keeping everyone safe out here and keeping an eye on what's going on."

He added: "You are doing a really good job out here, defending our freedoms is really important and everyone back home thoroughly supports you... and everything you are doing with our Polish counterparts in providing that safety is really important, so thank you for your time, lovely to meet you all and good luck."

Prince William reportedly spent 20 minutes talking to army personnel inside a military tent.

Prince William Visits the Tomb of the Unknown in Poland

Prince William also visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw, Poland, where he laid a wreath.

The wreath, signed with his name, bore a handwritten note: "In memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice." According to Daily Mail, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a monument dedicated to soldiers who died in conflict.

Prince William was greeted by dignitaries and a guard of honor comprised of Army, Navy, and Air Force members. He then solemnly walked to the monument, where he spent about 10 minutes before leaving.

It was Prince William's first visit to Poland since visiting the country with his wife, Kate Middleton, back in 2017.
