Ron DeSantis has now reacted to the indictment of former President Donald Trump, who is his top rival for the Republican nomination for president in 2024. The Florida governor had been slipping in the polls but has fallen in line with other Republicans to condemn Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

Like many Republicans, DeSantis claimed the Donald Trump indictment was "un-American" and was part of the Manhattan DA's "political agenda." He also stated that the law had been "weaponized" to target a political opponent like Trump.

The Florida governor, who is facing pressure from his own party, also stated that he will not extradite Trump to New York should an extradition be requested. Trump has changed his residence from New York to Florida and has been living in Mar-a-Lago since leaving the White House.

DeSantis received plenty of flak for this announcement, including saying that Bragg was backed by Soros. This accusation is often used by antisemitic elements in the right to target Democrats and is often used as an antisemitic trope.

Those replying to the Florida governor's statements have pointed out that DeSantis had been slipping in the polls and was desperate to win back Trump voters, so he was cooperating with the pro-Trump MAGA Republicans once again.

Donald Trump Calls Manhattan DA 'Thugs' and 'Monsters'

Trump took to Truth Social soon after the indictment dropped and said, "These Thugs and Radical Left Monsters have just INDICTED the 45th President of the United States of America, and the leading Republican Candidate, by far, for the 2024 Nomination for President."

According to CBS News, Trump followed this up with an all-caps rant, stating that this was an attack on the country the likes that have never been seen before. He also stated that this was an attack on free and fair elections before likening the United States to a third-world country.

Aside from allegations of paying a porn star not to talk about her affair with him during the 2016 elections, Donald Trump is being investigated in Georgia for election tampering, as well as Special Counsel Jack Smith for his attempts to overturn free and fair elections on January 6, 2021.

Other Reactions to Donald Trump's New York Indictment

Former presidential rival Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, whose father Trump accused of assassinating JFK, stated that the man who called his wife "ugly" is politically persecuted and that the Democrats' hatred for the former president knows no bounds.

Former Vice President Mike Pence said the indictment "offends the notion of the American people who believe in fairness, who believe in equal treatment before the law."

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a close Trump ally, stated that the House of Representatives will hold DA Alvin Bragg for his "abuse of power."

Meanwhile, former Trump lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen, the star witness for the Manhattan DA, said, "Today's indictment is not the end of the chapter, it is just the beginning ... Accountability really matters."

According to Reuters, former Republican Representative and January 6 Committee member Adam Kinzinger stated that "this indictment should be a reminder that in America, NO ONE is above the law." He added that people must let justice prevail and reminded everyone that Trump has committed many crimes.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer encourages Trump's critics and supporters to allow the process to "proceed peacefully and according to the law." Schumer led his fellow Democrat senators through both Trump's impeachment trials.

On the other hand, California Rep. Eric Swalwell, a Democrat, believes the former president "deserves every protection provided to him by the Constitution" and encourages the public to "neither celebrate nor destroy."
