A brawl erupted between a group of people and several white boaters in Montgomery, Alabama, August 5. That viral brawl was caught on video and has since become viral and inspired memes that are blowing up all over social media. What started this melee, though?

As the viral video suggests, a group of white men started attacking a black dockworker who was just asking them to move their pontoon boat from the dock so that a riverboat filled with around 200 passengers could dock.

The white boaters refused to move their small pontoon, leading to a confrontation, which then led to the boaters attacking the dock worker. However, several others rushed to the dock worker's aid, and an all-out brawl ensued.

Police later arrived but were initially ineffective at starting the brawl. In the end, they finally broke the fight, leading to the arrests of some of the white boaters.

This happened in one of Montgomery, Alabama's biggest tourist spots, the Riverfront, which also has a riverboat attraction. The white boaters were blocking that riverboat from docking, angering many of the passengers who captured the brawl on camera.

Christa Owen, who was aboard the riverboat, the Harriott II, spoke with NBC News and stated that she was with her daughter and husband when the confrontation started.

"What was hard is we were all on the boat and witnessing our poor crewman being attacked by these guys, and we couldn't do anything about it," said the passenger. "It was really difficult to watch, and, like I said, we felt helpless, because we were forced to be spectators."

She then called the actions of the rowdy boaters "inexcusable."

Warrants Issued Regarding the Viral Alabama Dock Brawl

Montgomery Police arrived at the scene and described the situation as d "a large group of subjects engaged in a physical altercation." They detained several involved in the Alabama brawl, though charges are still pending. Many of those arrested included the white boaters who initiated the brawl. According to CNN, there are now four active warrants that have been signed by a judge, and Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed vowed that "justice will be served."
