North Carolina State University police are investigating a student's death on Monday afternoon outside Sullivan Hall, a 12-story residence hall on campus.

Dead North Carolina Student, Not Yet Identified

The identity of the deceased student at North Carolina State University has not been disclosed, and the university has not issued a WolfAlert to inform students about the ongoing death investigation.

However, university spokesperson Lauren Barker has confirmed that the student who passed away was male, per The News&Observer.

North Carolina State Chancellor Randy Woodson released a statement on Tuesday addressing the on-campus death.

While he did not mention the student by name, he acknowledged the profound impact this loss will have on many resident students and housing staff.

Woodson expressed his condolences, saying, "There are no words I can share that will heal what many of you are feeling. Simply, I grieve with you."

North Carolina State University Witnessed 14 Deaths, Including 7 Suicides Last Year

The North Carolina State University campus was marked by police tape around Sullivan Residence Hall as authorities investigated the death of a male student on Monday.

This incident has raised concerns among students, who fear a repeat of the unfortunate events from the previous academic year when the university experienced 14 deaths, including seven suicides, The Daily Mail noted.

Last year's tragic statistics included seven suicides, two overdoses, one car wreck, and four deaths classified as "natural causes."

The high number of deaths, particularly suicides, prompted a strong response from students and the university.

In response, NC State increased its mental health staff from 35 to 50 clinicians, addressing the urgent need for more mental health support on campus.

A mental health task force was also established to assess and address the situation.

However, Vice Chancellor and Dean Doneka Scott emphasized that adding more counselors would not resolve the crisis.

The issue of mental health and suicide is a broader concern in the United States, with over 6,600 individuals aged 10 to 24 dying by suicide in 2020, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students after accidents.

A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in April revealed that 10.2 percent of US high school students reported attempting suicide in 2021, up from around eight percent in 2019.

Additionally, 30 percent of high school students stated that they experienced poor mental health "most of the time," with even higher figures, at 40 percent, among girls.

The recent student death at North Carolina State has prompted the cancellation of several college events, including a mental health workshop, highlighting the pressing need for continued efforts to address mental health concerns on campus and beyond.
