It may not seem like it, but Colombia has actually produced a lot of serial killers, with three of them becoming some of the most infamous in the world.

With the recent passing of Luis Garavito, also known as "La Bestia" or "The Beast," we take a look at some of Colombia's most infamous denizens and what they have done to garner such ill repute.

Colombia's 5 Most Infamous Serial Killers

Colombia has become known for serial killers, and it has boggled many why such a country could produce such monsters. Here are five of the most infamous ones, with the first three being the most infamous.

Luis Garavito, "The Beast"

Earlier this month, the man regarded as Colombia's deadliest and most infamous serial killer passed away at a hospital while serving his maximum 40-year prison sentence. However, a few years ago, when just the mere prospect of him being freed came up, Colombians united and demanded that he stay behind bars, and they actually got the then-president to agree.

However, why is Luis Garavito so feared and hated? The reason may be because he killed over 190 children. He targeted the children of the poor as he went around impoverished towns in Colombia during the 1990s. After befriending the children, he would take them to a secluded place and then rape them before murdering them. He was captured after being caught in the act.

Pedro Alonso Lopez, "The Monster of the Andes"

While Garavito targeted victims all over Colombia, Pedro Alonso Lopez had a much wider range as he terrorized not just his home country but also Ecuador and Peru. According to Vice, he may be responsible for the deaths of at least 110 young girls all over the Andean region.

He claimed that he killed over 300 young girls and women during his killing spree, and the worst part is that he may still be free to this day. While he was arrested in Ecuador, he was extradited back to Colombia, where he somehow was given bail. After paying his relatively low bail, he disappeared.

Daniel Camargo Barbosa, "The Sadist of El Charquito"

Daniel Camargo Barbosa truly lived up to his nickname as "The Sadist of El Charquito," as he became infamous for raping, murdering, and dismembering young girls in Colombia and nearby Ecuador. He was killed by a relative of one of his victims while serving time in prison, but he is regarded as one of the most prolific serial killers in history.

Maria Concepcion Ladino, "The Killer Witch"

While her death toll is not as much as the infamous "Three" mentioned above, she did become infamous for using poison to kill her victims. Maria Concepcion Ladino is responsible for killing seven people, all through the use of poison, though an eighth victim did manage to survive. According to Infobae, she is best known for using macabre methods in her killings.

Manuel Octavio Bermúdez, "The Monster of the Cane Fields"

We have yet another child molester in the form of "The Monster of the Cane Fields," Manuel Octavio Bermudez, who may be responsible for killing 21 children in the remote areas of Colombia. According to El Tiempo, he may have been a copycat of Luis Garavito as he closely followed the infamous serial killer's exploits and tried following La Bestia's cases. It is said that he was obsessed with Garavito and wanted to continue his macabre legacy. He is currently rotting away in prison.
