Two governors with ambitions for the White House are finally facing off in a debate as California Gov. Gavin Newsom is taking on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in a nationally televised debate happening on Fox News.

While DeSantis is currently running for president, Gavin Newsom is not. However, the debate between the two is still happening despite the Florida governor's continued failure to even dent Republican frontrunner Donald Trump's numbers.

Right now, DeSantis is betting big on winning Iowa and landing the opening blow on Trump, but as the former president continues to ignore the debates and go about his own way, DeSantis is seen as trying to prove that he can take on Democrats by debating the California governor.

DeSantis and Newsom have been at odds with one another, particularly with DeSantis's migrant busing stunts, which are under investigation for fraud. Fox News is billing the Newsom Vs. DeSantis debate as "The Great Red vs. Blue State Debate."

The debate will happen in the crucial swing state of Georgia which loudly rejected Donald Trump in 2020 and is now investigating him for election interference. The venue will be a studio in Alpharetta, Georgia, north of Atlanta, and there will be no audience. Sean Hannity, who has butted heads with Newsom in past interviews and praised DeSantis, will be the moderator.

With his struggles against Trump, DeSantis is seen to use this debate to gain momentum before his showdown with the former president. As for Gavin Newsom, he is seen to use this opportunity to reach a wider and more conservative audience, as it will be shown on Fox News, according to the Associated Press.

The debate is scheduled for 9 PM Eastern Time later today at Fox News.

The Contrasting Styles of Ron DeSantis and Gavin Newsom Will Be Shown During the Debate

While Newsom has worked for a more inclusive state in California and continues to have one of the richest economies in the world, DeSantis has been touting the influx of new residents from blue states in Florida despite the sky-high housing prices and mass exodus of labor due to his anti-immigration policies driving away migrants that work on some of Florida's most vital industries, such as farming and construction.

According to The Hill, both are expected to tout their state's policies, with Newsom expected to go after DeSantis for his stances on LGBTQ rights, voting rights, abortion, and education, while DeSantis is expected to go after Newsom on immigration and continue his "war on woke" agenda that has divided many Floridians.

The Differing Policies of Ron DeSantis and Gavin Newsom

As the BBC pointed out, during the debate, Newsom is expected to tout California's broad range of liberal social policies, including the state's healthcare and aid to the poor, gun control, openness to immigrants, and gay and transgender protections. All this while going after DeSantis's six-week ban on abortions, loosened restrictions on carrying firearms in public, limitations on how teachers can discuss gay and transgender issues in public-school classrooms, and invalidating out-of-state driving licenses issued to undocumented migrants.

Meanwhile, DeSantis is expected to continue his "War on Woke" arguments and say that California's liberal policies are hurting the state more. He is also expected to tout Florida's economy, which ranks fourth in the US (California's is ranked 1st), and the education in Florida, though he is expected to be attacked on these points by Newsom, too.
