The National Hockey League season may be over, but hockey fans across the world can still follow their favorite sport. On July 1, the NHL free agency period officially began. The biggest name off the board already is future hall of fame winger, Jarome Iginla. The 37-year-old, who has more than 500 career goals, recently signed with the Colorado Avalanche on a three year contract. He could be a great leader for the Avalanche.

Around the league there is still much talent to be signed at other positions

Goalies

Martin Brodeur

Could this finally be the end of an era in New Jersey? Brodeur has been playing for the Devils for over 15 years and helped the team win three Stanley Cup Championships. He will go down as one of the best goaltenders in NHL history on success and numbers alone. At 42 years old, Brodeur is obviously not in the prime of his career anymore, but is he ready to retire? NHL Rumors have the Pittsburgh Penguins interested.

Tim Thomas

Thomas is in the same boat as Brodeur; he's a former Vezina Trophy winner and a Stanley Cup champion. But on the flip side, he's 40 years old and the Dallas Stars may not want to bring him back. Thomas could be worth the investment because he's still a great leader and has championship experience. Even if a team needed a backup goalie, Thomas could be the answer.

Forwards

Daniel Alfredsson

Alfredsson has been a talented right winger ever since he entered the league in 1995. Last season, Alfredsson had 18 goals for the Detroit Red Wings. He's not a superstar anymore, but at the cost, he could be a steal. Alfredsson is still chasing his first Stanley Cup victory, so it's unlikely he will retire.

Nikolai Kulemin

This could be a big bargain for a team that needs a left winger. Kulemin has been an underrated player in Toronto playing for the Maple Leafs, which included one 30 goal season. For whatever reason, Kulemin's numbers have been dropping lately. At just 27, there's still plenty of time for improvement. Several teams will show interest.

Michael Grabovski

Grabovski has scored over 100 goals in his young career, and this center could be the steal of the off-season. Grabovski has spent the majority of his professional career with the Maple Leafs, but he could be playing elsewhere next season. His agent has already informed the league that he wants to test the market for a high price and multiple teams have shown interest.

Defense

Tim Gleason

With Christian Ehrhoff already signing with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Gleason is the top defensemen left on the board. Gleason made quite a name for himself with the Carolina Hurricanes and Team USA during the Winter Olympics. There's still a good chance that the Maple Leafs will re-sign Gleason to a multi-year deal before anybody else can get their hands on him.

Anton Volchenkov

This free agency doesn't favor defensemen very much at all. Volchenkov could be a good signing for a team that needs a big hitter and an enforcer. If you're looking for a scoring defensemen, then seek elsewhere. Volchenkov is a former first round pick who has spent the majority of his professional career with the Senators and Devils.
