House Republicans tried to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas but could not find any evidence of wrongdoing, leading to the impeachment effort to fail after several other Republicans defected and voted with Democrats to say no to impeaching him.

The Hill pointed out that the impeachment effort was an embarrassing defeat for House Republicans since three of their own sided with the Democrats in what would have been the second-ever impeachment of a Cabinet official. The final tally was 214-216 in a stunning defeat for Republicans as they faced pressure from the far right to Impeach any Biden official before the 2024 elections.

Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado, Rep. Tom McClintock of California, and Rep. Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin were the GOP lawmakers who voted against the impeachment of Alejandro Mayorkas, whom Republicans are blaming for the problems at the US-Mexico border. All Democrats, including Rep. Al Green of Texas, also voted no.

The biggest surprise came with a last-minute flip from Republican Rep. Blake Moore of Utah, the vice chair of the GOP conference. He flipped his vote to "no" just seconds before the vote closed. However, this is merely a procedural move that allows the conference to bring the legislation at a later date.

"House Republicans fully intend to bring Articles of Impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas back to the floor when we have the votes for passage, said Speaker Mike Johnson on X, formerly known as Twitter, with more and more in the far-right flank of the Republican Party asking to reintroduce the impeachment against Mayorkas.

Democrats Call Impeachment Vs. Alejandro Mayorkas a 'Sham' Meant To Please Donald Trump

Republicans have been blasted over the lack of grounds the impeachment has had, especially from their Democratic allies who stated that the impeachment was just a "sham" so the Republicans can please Donald Trump, who has been obsessed with getting Joe Biden or any member of the Biden administration impeached.

"A bunch of garbage," Rep. Jim McGovern of Massachusetts told the Associated Press, calling Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas "a good man, a decent man," who is simply trying to do his job.

Even if Republicans managed to impeach Mayorkas, the move is expected to fail in the Senate, which is under Democrat control.

White House Reacts To Alejandro Mayorkas Impeachment Failure

Soon after the House failed to impeach DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the White House released a statement, slamming Republicans for their politically-motivated attempt at impeachment.

"Clearly there is bipartisan agreement that this baseless, unconstitutional impeachment stunt should fail," said White House spokesperson Ian Sams in a statement on Tuesday evening, just a few minutes after the vote.

"House Republicans ought to realize that extreme political stunts like this are a waste of time, and instead join the President, Secretary Mayorkas, and Republicans and Democrats who want to work together to deliver real solutions that actually strengthen border security," he added.
