As the whole country gears up to celebrate Independence Day on the Fourth of July in various ways, New Yorkers know there is nothing better than watching the big annual fireworks events that go on once the sun goes down.

Macy's Fourth of July fireworks are one of the largest that take place each year in the United States, and this year they will take place over the East River. Historically they have taken place over the Hudson River, closer to New Jersey neighbors who could get a piece of the action. This year, Brooklyn and Manhattan will both be able to see the fireworks display.

There are a bevy of places on land to park yourself in order to watch the night-time display, and with a little research, you can find out which of these is best for you and your family. Something else that experienced Fourth of July viewers will know about is the cruise rides that let you take in the fireworks from a boat on the water, and this year it will bring you up close to the show on the East River. Many of these cruises sell out quickly, so be sure to make some reservations early. Another thing to keep in mind is that there are different types of cruises with some requiring that participants be age 21 and up only, while others are more friendly to young kids and families.

An example is the Circle Line which departs from Pier 83 at 42nd Street and the Hudson River, charging $125 per person. Most of the cruises are on the more expensive side but bargain-hunting can be had for those who wish to watch the celebration from the water. Brooklyn VI and Island Current Fleet are two carriers who both charge $75 and leave from Sheepshead Bay and City Island respectively. Regardless of whether you decide to go for a fancier spot or the good-old lawn chair, be sure not to miss this year's fireworks!
