The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 debuted Wednesday during Samsung's long-awaited Unpacked event just ahead of the IFA electronics conference in Berlin. Though everyone came to see the Note III, it wasn't the only piece of new age technology to garner attention.

The Note III's accessory piece, the Galaxy Gear smart watch, also made quite a few heads turn. Though it is not the first smart watch, the Galaxy Gear is the first smart watch made specifically for the purpose of accenting a specific smart phone. In this case, that smart phone is any Samsung Galaxy product.

"[Samsung exec Pranav] Mistry said Samsung focused on features that would let users keep their phones in their pockets, or avoid having to touch either the phone or the watch altogether. Users can make hands-free calls directly from the Gear, as well as dictate e-mail, set alarms and check the weather solely with their voices," reports CNN.

Using the smart watch to accent Samsung's Galaxy line definitely provides the company with a niche market, but will the novelty be enough to overcome it's limited capabilities? Yes, it's cool that the Galaxy Gear can display text messages you receive, but it also can only support 10 applications in its minuscule 4GB of memory.

"We haven't been blown away by any smart watch's performance, and that's much the case here. The Gear feels awfully sluggish, whether you're launching an app such as Evernote or Path, or swiping down from the home screen to activate the camera," writes engadget.com.

It should also be noted that the smart watch revolution is really just beginning. There have been a few small tech companies that have already entered the market, but Samsung is the first company of its size to attempt to redefine the wrist in such a fashion. Whether the smart watch will really take off as a technological accessory is still yet to be seen.

The Galaxy Gear will have a starting price of $299 and will come in a variety of colors you can choose from. It will be capable of taking photos, shooting videos, and alerting users whenever they receive a text, call, or e-mail. It is expected to be released the same day as the Note III, on September 25th.
