Well, here we are.

After 162 regular season games played by each and every team, the Major League Baseball postseason is ready to begin. Just 10 of the 30 teams qualified for the playoffs, and there will be two single elimination wild card playoff games.

The first playoff game will be between the Kansas City Royals and the Oakland Athletics Tuesday in the American League.

Kansas City Royals

The longest postseason drought in all of sports is officially over. The Royals made the playoffs for the first time since 1985. Now, the Toronto Blue Jays have the longest postseason drought, dating back to 1993.

Despite being the only team in the league this season with less than 100 home runs, the Royals still ranked 14th overall in runs scored. This team doesn't hit the long ball very often, but they get timely hits that drive in runs. Alex Gordon, Salvador Perez and Alcides Escobar have all provided at least 150 hits for the Royals this season.

James Shields, who had a 14-8 record this year, will be starting against the Athletics. Shields got a lot of playoff experience with the Tampa Bay Rays, and this will be his first postseason start since 2011. The 32-year-old righthander will be pitching in his most important game for the Royals yet.

Oakland Athletics

It looked like the Oakland Athletics were going to be the No. 1 seed in the American League for sure. The Athletics had the best record in the league midway through the season, but questionable decisions at the trade deadline leave this team facing a one-game elimination as a wild card team.

The Athletics went 12-17 in August and finished the season 10-16 in September. General manager Billy Beane is trying to lead the Athletics to their first World Series since 1990.

Josh Donaldson led the Athletics in hits, home runs and runs batted in during the regular season. Pitchers Sonny Gray and Scott Kazmir were the two best pitchers both recording at least 14 wins. Jon Lester is schedule to start against the Royals in Game 1. Lester is a clutch pitcher who has won two World Series titles with the Boston Red Sox, including last season.

Schedule, Where to Watch

The Royals and Athletics will play one another in Kansas City, Missouri at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday night. The game is scheduled to begin at 8:07 p.m. EST on TBS.

Predictions

It's unfortunate that after 162 games, the first round comes down to just a single game elimination. But, it is what it is. The Royals ended the season much better than the Oakland Athletics did, and Royals fans have been waiting a long time for this. Pitchers James Shields and Jon Lester should be set for a pitching duel. The Royals were 5-2 against the Athletics this season.

Royals win a defensive battle, 3-2.
