Many of us have heard the old saying from our grandmothers that "The way to a man's heart is through his stomach," but how many women take this too seriously -- and actually digest it?

New York Post Writer Stephanie Smith, author of the blog, 300sandwiches.com based on a culinary quest that involves making 300 sandwiches in return for a marriage proposal, has feminists in an uproar over her efforts.

The New York Post featured an in-depth article about Smith's carb-filled marriage mission. So how did it the idea come to fruition?

"Each morning, he would ask, "Honey, how long you have been awake?"

"About 15 minutes," I'd reply.

"You've been up for 15 minutes and you haven't made me a sandwich?"

"To him, sandwiches are like kisses or hugs. Or sex. 'Sandwiches are love,' he says. "Especially when you make them. You can't get a sandwich with love from the deli..."

Then came Smith's famous turkey and Swiss sandwich that rocked his world.

"As he finished that last bite, he made an unexpected declaration of how much he loved me and that sandwich: 'Honey, you're 300 sandwiches away from an engagement ring!'"

While we all love a good sandwich, many would prefer the kisses, hugs or sex and not have the stakes be so high.

On the other hand, maybe Smith was speaking from the heart, trying to relate to other thirty-somethings searching for their happy ending.

"Things were moving at a natural pace, but I wondered what it would take for him to propose. I'm in my mid-30s, and my parents have been happily married for more than 35 years. I have always valued the commitment and dedication it takes to get married and stay married. Call me old-fashioned, but I'd like to raise a family with someone who feels likewise," she wrote.

Then she went on, and possibly reopened the floodgates for naysayers, "Maybe I needed to show him I could cook to prove that I am wife material. If he wanted 300 sandwiches, I'd give him 300 sandwiches - and I'd blog about it."

Both women and men shared their thoughts on the matter through social media, which was compiled by CBC News' Your Community blog

Nikki @richnickels --"Read #300sandwiches. Great food blog. Unnerving relationship concept. Why do we still believe marriage is something women 'earn' from men?"

Robert Mitchell iii @RLM_3 -- "Ladies, please know your self-worth. There's nothing cute about this ghost. This is past problematic. #300sandwiches"

The midwest native who lives in New York with her boyfriend, responded to the negative blacklash in the New York Post, saying "The blog started as a lighthearted joke between boyfriend and girlfriend. I presented it to the world because I thought at least one person would find the humor in the idea of sandwiches for an engagement ring. This project is not about me promoting myself as some gourmet chef, nor a desperate plot to win Eric's love -- or a movie deal or Internet fame."
