The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, became the first member of his political party to enroll as an online member Saturday.

The campaign for membership kicked off with his signup, which was touted on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Facebook page as well as on other media sites.

He received a lot of attention for having to participate in the first online-heavy campaign leading up to his victory in Indian elections this year.

He took to Twitter and other social media, as did opposition parties including the newly-formed Aam Admi Party (AAP).

The renewed membership drive, launched online Saturday, is one that highlights the diversification that the BJP is aiming for, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI).

"Our country is full of diversity. BJP should also be seen as full of diversity. The bouquet of crores of BJP workers should be such that people from all regions should feel that their flower is also represented in this bouquet," Modi told PTI.

He continued by saying that there is a need to encourage more people to join the party in order to make it one of the most powerful political parties worldwide.

"There is a perception that politics is filthy. However, that is not true. Had it been filthy, Mahatma Gandhi would never have ventured into it." Modi told Zee News.

BJP chief Amit Shah said that the party is the only one that follows democratic rules and holds an election every two years.

The membership drive is being achieved through a toll-free number as well, which allows members who don't have online access to call, leaving a missed call on the line, and their membership number and other details will be sent through an SMS message.

"The membership drive will continue from November 1 to March 31, which will also have special campaigns and days for women, students, youth and businessmen," Shah said.
