We're just two weeks into the 2014-15 NBA season, but it's been an exciting one so far.

It appears as if the best division in the NBA is the Southwest division. The Memphis Grizzlies, Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks are the three best teams in the division so far, and all three have championship hopes this year.

The Grizzlies are a very defensive-oriented basketball team. Last season, the Grizzlies had the No. 1 ranked defense in the NBA, and wouldn't you know it, they are right back on top once again. The Grizzlies defense is allowing a league low 91.7 points per game against this season.

Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph are averaging a combined 17.8 rebounds and 34.7 points per game this season. Gasol and Randolph have become one of the best frontcourt combinations in the entire league ranking up there with Tim Duncan and Tiago Splitter. Amazingly, both Gasol and Randolph are shooting over 81 percent from the free throw line.

Outside of the Gasol-Randolph duo, the Grizzlies have been getting scoring support from Mike Conley, Courtney Lee and even Vince Carter. It's a tough Western Conference, but the Grizzlies have made the playoffs the last four consecutive seasons.

This season the Grizzlies are 6-0 against Western Conference teams and 4-0 at home. Their only loss this season was a 93-92 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on the road. Recently at home, against the Sacramento Kings, Lee caught an inbounds pass with just 0.4 seconds remaining from Carter, and he made the game-winning layup. The Grizzlies won the game 111-110.

But the Grizzlies can't take it easy. Just one game behind them are the Houston Rockets.

The Rockets are 7-1 this season with a home loss to the Golden State Warriors. The Rockets have arguably the best scorer in the NBA, James Harden. Harden is averaging 25.1 points per game this season so far, second only to Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers. Harden is capable of hitting perimeter shots, layups and mid range jump shots. His defense, on the hand, is still a work in progress.

Dwight Howard is widely regarded as the best center in the league, and he's off to a great start. Howard is averaging 11.3 rebounds per game as well as 20 points per game. Jason Terry and Trevor Ariza have proven to be great additions, as they both lead the Rockets in three point shots made this season. With Ariza and Terry making so many perimeter shots, it opens up things for Howard down low and prohibits double teams against Harden so often.

The Rockets and Grizzlies will face each other for the first time this season on Monday, Nov. 17 in Memphis.

The Grizzlies and Rockets appear to be the favorites in the Southwest division, but we can't sleep on the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavericks have made the postseason 13 of the last 14 seasons, including last year. With Dirk Nowitzki taking a huge pay cut (fourth highest paid player on team), this Mavericks team was able to build around him with players such as Chandler Parsons and Tyson Chandler.

The Mavericks are 6-3 after nine games played.

Nowitzki leads the team in scoring at just over 20 points per game, and Chandler's 9.8 rebounds per game is tops on the Mavericks. The Mavericks also have one of the best coaches in the league, Rick Carlisle. Carlisle led the Mavericks to an NBA Championship back in 2011 over LeBron James and the Miami Heat. In their last game, the Mavericks absolutely annihilated the Philadelphia 76ers, 123-70, giving the 76ers their third-worst loss in franchise history.

The San Antonio Spurs are also in this division, but a slow start has the defending champions just 4-3 after seven games.

The Southwest division appear to be the best division in the league, and NBA fans are in for a great race between these teams.
