Miss Honduras and her 23-year-old sister were found dead in a remote village nearly a week after they went missing.

The bodies were found in the country's western department of Santa Barbara in Cablotales village, near the Aguagua River, according to La Prensa.

The 19-year-old beauty queen, María José Alvarado, and her sister, Sofia Trinidad, were last seen Thursday leaving a party. The pair celebrated Trinidad's boyfriend's birthday at a spa just 240 miles west of Tegucigalpa.

Sofia's boyfriend, Plutarco Ruiz, is one of the four suspects that were being questioned about the young women disappearance, along with the unidentified business owner of the spa the two were last seen in.

Although no signs of a kidnapping were evident, police believe that the sisters were abducted.

"Witnesses said my daughter left the spa with three men," the mother of Miss Honduras, Teresa Muñoz, told reporters. "I tried repeatedly all night to call their cellphones without any response."

National Police director, Gen. Ramon Sabillon, said authorities are waiting for results from forensic officials to confirm that the bodies are the two of them.

Investigation into the case is still ongoing. There are leads that cannot be discussed as not to interfere with the investigation, Chief prosecutor Gabriela Carranza said.

Alvarado was crowned Miss Honduras back in April and was supposed to have left for England on Sunday to compete in the Miss World pageant next month.

Honduras has the world's highest homicide rate at 90 homicides per 100,000. A recent report, entitled "Other Situations of Violence in the Northern Triangle of Central America," reported that "Honduras remains the most violent country in the world."

The murder of the beauty queen and her sister is expected to heighten national awareness of violent crime in Honduras.
