Honduran authorities detained four people for the disappearance of Miss Honduras 2014. Police said Monday that the four suspects are being held for questioning for the disappearance of Maria José Alvarado last week.

One of the detainees, Plutarco Ruiz, is the boyfriend of Sofia Trinidad, Alvarado's sister. The 23-year-old Sofia also went missing along with Miss Honduras, OC Register reports.

Another detainee is an unidentified business owner. The beauty queen was last seen in his establishment.

Police spokesman Lt. Joseph Coello said there were originally 10 suspects in total detained but six were released, according to Wopular.

The two women were last seen Thursday in Santa Barbara at a spa just 240 miles west of Tegucigalpa. They went to celebrate Ruiz's birthday and have not been seen or heard from since.

Her mother, Teresa Muñoz, told reporters, "Witnesses said my daughter left the spa with three men. I tried repeatedly all night to call their cellphones without any response."

Coello said the case is not being treated as a disappearance because there has been no evidence of a kidnapping.

Police say it is not likely that there was a kidnapping because the family was not contacted for any ransom demands.

Too many details of the case cannot be discussed so as to not interfere with the investigation, chief prosecutor Gabriela Carranza said.

The 19-year-old Alvarado was crowned Miss Honduras in April and is expected to compete in the Miss World pageant in London next month. She was scheduled to have left for England on Sunday.

As the international beauty competition goes forward next month, the disappearance of Miss Honduras can bring heightened global attention to crime in the country. Honduras has the world's highest murder rate.
