Nintendo Wii U has taken a distant third place to Xbox and PlayStation for quite some time. This year, the gaming system could close that gap thanks to new games and excitement toward the system.

With Super Smash Bros. being released Friday, Wii U can expect more sales in both software and hardware.

Thanks to the popularity and excitement of the Super Smash Bros. franchise, Wii U will give Nintendo a surge in sales and likely give them its best holiday season in years.

Black Friday will take place a week after the game's release. That likely means that gamers saved up their money for both Black Friday and Smash Bros.

Thursday evening in Manhattan, there was a line around the block of the Nintendo World store, where many were excited for the midnight release of the game.

Even analysts are excited about the game, as they originally had negative projects for the future of Nintendo.

"There hasn't been much good news to report regarding Nintendo's financial situation since the company's historic annual loss way back in the 2011 to 2012 period," Michael Pachter, a video games analyst for Wedbush Securities, told Fortune. "That may be changing. Strong sales of new Wii U and 3DS software helped raise the company to a surprising quarterly profit of 24.2 billion yen (about $224 million) in net income for the three months ending September 2014. That's quite a turnaround after a loss of over eight billion yen (about $74.2 million) in the same period last year."

Further, Pachter expects Smash Bros. to sell 4 million copies worldwide.

There may be no Grand Theft Auto 5 for Nintendo Wii, but Nintendo is keeping its course with gamers' favorite loveable characters, such as Pikachu, Mario, Yoshi, Link and Wario.

Mario Kart 8 sold in record numbers and got Nintendo back in the game, and now it's time for the fan favorite Super Smash Bros. to help propel Wii U back into a fair fight with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Despite being out for almost twice as long as Xbox One and PlayStation 4, Wii U is still lagging way behind in sales.
