Earlier this year Snapchat announced "geofilters," a feature that enables users to add image filters if in a certain location. The feature has been used exclusively by Snapchat developers to create and place pieces of art in places like company headquarters and coffee shops, but today the company is giving everyone access to the feature, reports the Verge.

With the feature, the unique designs of geofilters and the user's location are shared with friends using filter overlays. The special overlays for Snaps can only be accessed in specific locations. The designs will change from place-to-place. Currently, users can find them in a handful of cities around the world.

Artists and designers can use this fun tool to post their one-of-a-kind art to the Snapchat community.

According to Snapchat, how geofilters work is fairly simple: you choose the geographical location and then upload what image you want to display using the geofilter community pageAfter you take a Snap, swipe right or left on the preview screen to add geofilters to your image.

"All images must be original artwork and have to be approved by the Snapchat team," the company notes.

Users will have to enable location services in the app for geofilters to work.

"Although you'll need to enable location services for this feature, we don't store your location," the company says regarding privacy concerns.

Most of the filters have been pinpointed to locations in New York City and Los Angeles.

The geofilter community page is the most recent way Snapchat seeks to monetize its service. Last month, the company launched a feature called Snapcash that allows users to send money from a debit card to a friend's account. The feature is available on Android with Apple iOS to be added soon, according to Snapchat.
