If you've stopped by cinemas and found yourself watching subpar promos for movies that otherwise have gotten rave reviews, no worries: This week, the first trailer for "Mad Max: Fury Road" was released and it is scorching red-hot. There's a "trailer-ending firestorm of destruction," and plenty of explosions that would make even Michael Bay jealous.

The trailer promises a world "without hope, without law, without mercy." In this case, let's hope so.

According to the press release, this film will follow the film's protagonist where the last film, 1985 sci-fi road movie "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" starring Mel Gibson and Tina Turner, left off:

"From director George Miller, originator of the post-apocalyptic genre and mastermind behind the legendary 'Mad Max' franchise, comes 'Mad Max: Fury Road,' a return to the world of the Road Warrior, Max Rockatansky. Haunted by his turbulent past, Mad Max believes the best way to survive is to wander alone. Nevertheless, he becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa. They are escaping a Citadel tyrannized by the Immortan Joe, from whom something irreplaceable has been taken. Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs and pursues the rebels ruthlessly in the high-octane Road War that follows."

The upcoming Armageddon shoot 'em up film directed, produced and co-written by George Miller is sure to be a summer blockbuster movie. According to IGN, plans for the fourth film of the Mad Max series hit financial difficulties and the project spent around 25 years in "development hell." Up until 2000, the film's original star, Gibson, was interested in returning for the franchise, but lost interest, Screenrant reports.

Miller, whose projects have a habit of falling by the wayside (his adaptation the much-anticipated "Justice League" film was cancelled at the last minute with David S. Joyer taking over), had planned to shoot the film in Broken Hill last year. However, the director was forced to abandon those proposals after rainfall turned the required desert landscape green. There were also numerous setbacks, the most significant being the Iraq War in 2003.

No matter, it's back on track and, if all goes well, a second feature-length film will be released shortly after. Although little information has been released, "Mad Max 5: Furiosa" is slated to immediately follow the latest installment.

The first film of the franchise in 30 years, "Fury Road" features actor Tom Hardy as "Mad" Max Rockatansky and Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa.

With an all-star cast, that film will also includes a host of young Hollywood stars such as Nicholas Hoult ("X-Men: Days of Future Past"), Rosie Huntington-Whiteley ("Transformers 3"), Zoë Kravitz ("X-Men: First Class"), Riley Keough ("Magic Mike") and Adelaide Clemens ("Silent Hill: Revelation 3D").

The film is scheduled to be released on May 15, 2015.
