Liverpool FC confirmed Steven Gerrard will not return to the club when his current deal expires after the season.

Gerrard has spent his entire club career at Liverpool, where he won several titles since his debut in 1998. The 34-year-old midfielder won the Champions League and UEFA Cup once, and FA Cup twice at Anfield.

Since the start of the season, there has been speculation that this season might be Gerrard's final run at Anfield after the two sides did not reach a contract extension. While there are still months to extend their partnership, Gerrard said that he had to announce his decision to give the team time to map out a plan for the offseason.

"This has been the toughest decision of my life and one which both me and my family have agonized over for a good deal of time," Gerrard said in a statement. "I am making the announcement now so that the manager and the team are not distracted by stories or speculation about my future."

Gerrard, who also announced his retirement from England national team duties last year to focus on his club career, said retirement is not yet in sight as he is determined to continue playing elsewhere.

The veteran midfielder is still unsure about his next destination, but he said he will make sure that it will not be with a team that will have to compete with Liverpool.

"I'm going to carry on playing and although I can't confirm at this stage where that will be, I can say it will be somewhere that means I won't be playing for a competing club and will not therefore be lining up against Liverpool - that is something I could never contemplate," Gerrard said.

Multiple reports indicated Gerrard, who has been with Liverpool since he was just eight years old, will likely sign with a Major League Soccer (MLS) team in the United States.

According to ESPN FC, the Los Angeles Galaxy could be his next destination. Sources said that the Galaxy are planning to make a strong push to acquire Gerrard in their bid to acquire a player who could help them continue their winning tradition in the MLS.
