With Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu currently on the Oscar campaign trail for his latest film “Birdman,” the director was able to share some insight on his upcoming 2015 film “The Revenant.”

The new film starring Leonardo DiCaprio already has a lot of Oscar buzz because it is being released on Christmas day in limited release and it has a starry cast that also includes Tom Hardy (“The Dark Knight Rises”), Domhnall Gleeson (“Unbroken") and Will Poulter (“We’re the Millers”). The new film will also see him re-team with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, who also worked on “Birdman” and won an Academy Award for “Gravity.”

During a press conference, Inarritu was asked if the new film would be done in one shot like “Birdman.” However, the director quickly denied it. He said, “It definitely will not be one long take, or I would commit suicide as Riggan Thompson tried to do [in ‘Birdman’].”

“But I don’t think I can see cinema in the same way anymore, so something in ‘Revenant’ will come from ‘Birdman. I can’t tell you what, but something,” he added.

“The Revenant” is currently still filming and is slated to finish production in April. During the conference, Inarritu added that movie was being shot in Calgary and therefore there was hardly any signal. He said, “We’re shooting in the very high mountains where there’s no signal, so I’ll be completely out of reach all day.”

“The Revenant” tells the story of a frontiersman, Hugh Glass, who in the 1820s set out on a path of vengeance against those who left him for dead after a bear mauling. The film is based on a novel by Michael Punke and was adapted by Inarritu and Mark. L. Smith.

Inarritu is best known for his work on “Amores Perros,” “Biuitful,” “Babel” and “21 Grams.” All four films have went on to get nominated for Academy Awards. “Amores Perros” scored a nomination for Best Foreign Film as well as “Biutiful,” while “Babel” was nominated for Best Picture and won for Best Score. “21 Grams” was also nominated for two Academy Awards and “Birdman” is expected to lead the Oscar nominations this year.

“Birdman” is currently in theaters and has been scoring multiple critics’ awards. It is currently nominated for seven Golden Globe nominations and multiple Critics’ Choice Awards. “Birdman” was Inarritu’s first film that did not feature a Latin American actor and it also marked the first time the director worked with Lubezki. He had previously collaborated with Rodrigo Prieto on his four previous films. “Birdman” stars Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Edward Norton, Lindsay Duncan, Zach Galifianakis and Andrea Riseborough.

“The Revenant” is slated to open opposite David O. Russell’s “Joy” starring Jennifer Lawrence, “Mission Impossible 5” starring Tom Cruise, and “Alvin and the Chipmunks 4.” Fox will release “The Revenant” as well as “Joy” and “Alvin and Chipmunks 4.”

Once the film hits limited release, Fox plans on releasing “The Revenant” nationwide on Jan. 8.
