Fox has announced its 2016 lineup which includes a number of franchise films and a number of anticipated films.

Among those films is Channing Tatum’s X-Men spinoff, “Gambit.”

The movie has been rumored for quite some time, but Fox never confirmed when it would be made and when it would be released. Tatum had been cast a few months ago, but there were rumors he would appear in the upcoming “X-Men: Apocalypse.” Fox’s announcement comes as no surprise as there have been rumors that the studio wants to try and do its own cinematic universe, similar to Disney's treatment of its Marvel films. This past summer, “X-Men: Days of Future Past” was a huge success and it proved that superhero movies can still make money as long as they are good. “Gambit” is now slated for an Oct. 7 release date.

The 2016 slate will also include the highly-anticipated “Assassin’s Creed.” Originally slated for 2015, production has been delayed as Michael Fassbender, who is slated to star, has been extremely busy. The film will be directed by Justin Kurzel and it will reunite the actor and director after their work on “Macbeth,” which is slated for release this year. “Assassin’s Creed” is based on the popular video game of the same name and is one of most acclaimed and revered franchises in years. The film is due out Dec. 21, 2016, a week after the next "Star Wars" movie.

With these two big tentpole films, the studio has decided to shift the release dates for sequels “The Fantastic Four 2” and the untitled "Planet of the Apes" movie. “The Fantastic Four” reboot is due out this year in the summer and is among the most anticipated films this year. Fox had originally scheduled the sequel for next year, but, due to an overcrowded slate, Fox decided to move the film to June 2, 2017.

The third installment to the "Planet of the Apes" was also moved up a year. The film is now slated for July 14, 2017. “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” was one of the breakout hits of the year as it became the first Planet of the Apes films to make over $200 million and also made over $700 million worldwide. The film was also a critical darling and is slated to get nominated for the Academy Awards. The upcoming third installment has yet to announce a cast, but is known that Andy Serkis will reprise his role as Caesar.

The studio also announced that it would be releasing “The Greatest Show on Earth” starring Hugh Jackman, which will be directed by Michael Gracey and written by Bill Condon.

The company will also release the romantic comedy “The Mountain Between Us” starring Charlie Hunnam and Rosamund Pike. The film is slated for Feb. 10, 2017.

Fox had one of the best years in 2014 as eight of its films made over $100 million. While the company struggled with its animated films, the studio had a number of breakout hits including “The Fault in Our Stars,” “The Maze Runner,” “Let’s Be Cops” and “The Other Woman.”
