DC Comics announced Tuesday that it has launched Mortal Kombat X, a new weekly Digital First comic series based on the game franchise.

The comic book series will feature favorite characters including Scorpion, Raiden, Sub-Zero, along with the newest generation of Kombatants.

Scorpion, the most well-known character, leads fans into the world of Mortal Kombat X. Fans can expect to learn what happens when he transforms from undead wraith back life. There is a lot of uncharted territory to cover, like the difference between Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion.

Shawn Kittelsen, a writer making his DC Comics comic book debut with Mortal Kombat X, promises that fans will get to know telekinetic Zatoichi Kenshi from the 2011 game much better.

"This is Mortal Kombat the way it should be: a no-holds-barred, martial-arts epic with a massive cast of iconic characters," Kittelsen said. "Series favorites like Scorpion and Sub-Zero appear in new and surprising roles, and the comics will be your first look at the origins of new characters like Kotal Kahn and Cassie Cage. Also, fatalities."

Kittelsen told IGN that the comic book stories take place several years before the game. "There are 25 years between Mortal Kombat 2011 and Mortal Kombat X, so we're somewhere in the middle of that timeline. This allows us to meet some of the newer characters while they're still in their formative years, figuring out who they are and why they fight, as well as check in on the classic characters."

Fan who see a character in the comic should not assume they'll see them in the game, warns Kittlesen. A big question is whether or not Kenshi's son Takeda will survive to see adulthood in the game. Fans will have to read the comic and watch Ed Boon's Twitter account to find out.

Ed Boon, Creative Director at NetherRealm Studios that develops the game, said the Mortal Kombat X comic is "a great lead-up to what we have in store for the game."

The first digital chapter of Mortal Kombat X will be printed on Jan. 14 in a three-chapter bundle with subsequent issues released on Sundays. It is available for download on the DC Comics App, Google Play, Readdcentertainment.com, Nook Store, Kindle Store, comiXology.com, iVerse ComicsPLUS and iBooks.

"Mortal Kombat X" is the next installment of the fighting video game series. It is the 10th main title scheduled for release April 14. The "Mortal Kombat" game franchise is developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
