Many of us grew up during the time when the Internet was a newfangled way to communicate with friends and strangers alike. Of course, one of the biggest fears parents who lived through the beginning of the internet age was that their child or children would encounter predators who would try to convince them to meet in person.

"Unfriended," a new film from Universal, explores that fear. The film stars "Days of Our Lives" veteran Shelley Hennig, musician/actress Renee Olstead, and virtual unknowns Jacob Wysocki and William Peltz, with Levan Gabriadze directing.

The movie revolves around a group of young friends who become shaken once an embarrassing video featuring one of them gets posted online. Shortly afterward, the person who was in that clip kills themself, and a video of the suicide gets posted onto the internet as well.

Some time later, the remaining friends join up in a group chat on Skype to talk about upcoming plans to get together, when an unidentified person also joins the conversation. For a while, they refuse to speak when asked to identify themselves. However, as soon as they do, that's when the movie's plot really seems to get going.

The unknown person demands to know who posted the embarrassing video, and when the friends refuse to provide information, the unknown person begins to threaten them and terrorize their lives through means unknown.

Sounds enticing? This may not be a horror film that takes a classic monster approach to scares, but that's no reason to write it off just yet.

For what it's worth, "Unfriended" was initially released at the Fantasia Film Festival last year, and reportedly received predominantly positive feedback.

"Unfriended" will hit theaters April 17 this year.
