It was just 2011 when Nnamdi Asomugha was one of the league's most feared defensive backs and went on to sign a five-year, $60 million contract. Fast forward just two years and you'll find that his NFL career might be finished.

The veteran cornerback was sent packing by the San Francisco 49ers this week after a brief stint back on the west coast. He spent most of his career with the Raiders before heading to Philadelphia for a short stint with the Eagles. If no team picks him up on waivers, the 49ers will be responsible for paying the remainder of his salary for this year.

In other news, the 49ers are activating receiver Mario Manningham from the Physically Unable to Perform list. Manningham will be making his 2013 season debut after missing the entire first half due to an injury he suffered in December of last year. He has been practicing with the team for the past few weeks so he has been able to ease his way back into San Francisco's offense.

The 49ers could use his help considering that the team is dead last in the league in passing yards per game. Even better, Manningham was the second-best receiver on the team last year along with Michael Crabtree, who is currently out with an injury. The team's rushing game, on the other hand, has seen great success this year and is ranked at the top of the league statistically.

The 49ers are coming off a 42-10 win on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars and will return home to host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday before a big matchup the week after against Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints.
