Valentine's Day is a time to show love to the person you consider the most special in your life. Unfortunately, it can get very expensive. Good thing there are ways to show you care without breaking the bank.

When considering a gift, think about things that show thought. Instead of buying expensive jewelry, consider tickets to a movie or dinner at your partner's favorite restaurant.

Here, we detail some affordable gifts for both men and women.

For men

A personalized gift basket that you make yourself will impress the man in your life. If your guy has a sweet tooth, gather a bunch of different sized candy bars and scatter them through the box. Throw in some pictures of the two of you and a personalized note. The gift basket can be made of little things that you know he loves, and it does not have to cost much at all. Check out this pin from Pinterest for an example of a sweet and salty basket.

Get the basket at Wal-Mart or a dollar store and grab some small gifts at places like Walgreens or the super market. You could even add travel sized shaving creams and toothpastes as thoughtful additions to the basket.

If you cannot find the time to make a gift basket, take your significant other out to a sports event or concert. You may not like the team or the band, but he sure will. He will appreciate you trying to care about his interests.

For dinner, make a special meal. Stay at home and cook something that you both enjoy.

For women

Show the woman in your life that you care about her. You can treat her to a day at the spa. Look online for spa gift cards that will offer discounts at places where she can be pampered. This does not have to cost a ton of money, even treating her to a massage at Massage Envy will make her happy.

Much like the men, women will appreciate personalized gifts. Try buying a blank scrap book and creating a story about the special events in your life. Maybe you can find all of the pictures you took from when you first met or you can add items that hold significance for the two of you, such as the ticket stub from your first movie date. Try to create a theme when designing this scrap book. It does not have to be too artsy: Just assemble the pictures in an album and write some basic captions next to the photos. She will love it.
