Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya admitted he wants to arrange an all-Mexican showdown between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

De La Hoya believes a fight between the two Mexican boxing superstars will be big, but the Hall of Fame boxer admitted that the bout is impossible to make at this point, citing the size disparity between the two fighters.

Chavez, who holds an impressive 48-1-1 record with 32 knockout victories, is the former World Boxing Council middleweight champion, but is now fighting at 175 pounds.

"I would want it, but it would be impossible," De La Hoya told reporters on the Alvarez-Chavez showdown, according to Boxing News. "They are at much different weights, different divisions. Julio is now going to fight at 175-pounds and that is already way too much for Saul, who is going to be fighting at 154-pounds."

Alvarez, a former world junior welterweight champion who currently holds 44-1-1 record with 36 knockouts, was linked to a showdown against Miguel Cotto, but the negotiation for the proposed WBC middleweight title fight went down as the two camps failed to find a common ground.

Following their failure to secure a fight against Cotto, Alvarez and his camp named James Kirkland as Canelo's next opponent for his next fight.

De La Hoya told BoxingScene that the Alvarez-Kirkland showdown will be scheduled on Cinco de Mayo weekend on May 2, but the Golden Boy promoter also added that they will have to move the fight to May 9 if the showdown between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. happens on May 2.

"I'm going full steam ahead with May 2nd. We're going full steam ahead with May 2nd," De La Hoya said of the Alvarez-Kirkland fight. "We're going to announce the ticket details shortly. Canelo-Kirkland, May 2nd, from Texas. The only way we're moving is if Pacquiao-Mayweather happens. That's the only fight that's going to move us."

Despite failing to finalize a title fight against Cotto, De La Hoya is confident that the Alvarez-Kirkland nontitle fight will do good numbers because of Canelo's growing popularity.

The 42-year-old promoter said the fight could sell 65,000 tickets if it will be staged at Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas based on how Canelo's fight against Austin Trout in 2012 drew more than 40,000 fans.
