Apple may soon release an iPhone sporting a larger, curved-glass screen.

Reports have been circulating over the recent weeks that Apple is exploring the idea of releasing larger-screened smartphones. Following the trend of phablets (phone-tablet), which Samsung has already been known for, the Cupertino-based company will be joining the bandwagon with two new iPhones by next year. Bloomberg reports that Apple will launch a 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screen smartphones that will battle the 5.7-inch screen Galaxy Note 3 that Samsung released last September.

"Screen size is one of the things where Apple has to catch up to the Android camp," Yuanta Financial Holding Co. analyst Dennis Chan told CNN. "Innovation in components has been a key for Apple since the first iPhone came out."

A source familiar with the project also told Bloomberg that the tech company will also pack the new phones with curved glass screens "that curves downward at the edges." This will probably aim to counter another Samsung device released last month, the Galaxy Round, with a 5.7-inch screen.

CNN also noted that curved-screen smartphones are currently becoming a trend, with LG also joining the mix with its G Flex phone "which is curved from top to bottom."

Bloomberg's source also reported that an enhanced sensor for the iPhone will also be included to future features of the smartphone series. The sensor will be able to detect the different levels of pressure input on the phone's screens. However, the source noted that all ideas are still in their development stages and that Apple has yet to complete their plans. In fact, the person notes that the pressure sensitive sensors may not even be ready for the next iPhone but may come as an add-on to later models.

As for the curved-screen iPhones, the source notes Apple could release them by the third quarter of next year.
