Sony Computer Entertainment released the PlayStation 4, its newest video game console, on Nov. 15th and sold one million systems in just 24 hours.

Gamers in the United States and Canada gave Sony its impressive sales, which includes pre-ordered consoles. Yesterday, Shuhei Yoshida, president of Worldwide Studios for Sony Computer Entertainment, announced the news.

"PS4 has sold through over 1 million units within 24 hours of the launch in North America!!! :D," Yoshida said via Twitter.

"PS4 was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal," Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, said in a statement on Sunday.

House predicted that five million PS4 units will be sold by March 2014.

"Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29th," House said.

North American sales for the PS4 surpassed those during the release of the PlayStation 2 in Japan, The Verge reports, making it Sony's fastest-selling video game console ever.

According to tech blog Ars Technica, however, these numbers don't mean much.

"The reality is that every console this side of the Ouya sells out in its first days on the market," the blog said. "If the console maker is doing anything right, there should be more than enough demand from early adopters to eat up as much hardware as the company can produce for weeks after launch, especially during the feeding frenzy of the holiday season. The real question is whether a company can ride that early success to continued sales through the next spring and beyond, when consumers have tried out the system ..."

Sony's PS4 is available starting at $399.
