Veteran actor John Travolta has made headlines because of his appearance at the 87th Academy Awards in Hollywood on Sunday night, but it's not for an Oscar win but for his odd behavior.

It all started when the 61-year-old actor got touchy-feely with actress Scarlett Johansson on the red carpet. Johansson, 30, who looked gorgeous in a floor-length, hunter-green Atelier Versace gown, appeared extremely uncomfortable as Travolta placed his hand on her tummy and gave her a kiss. Her side-eye glance to the "Hairspray" star was caught on camera. The two worked together on the film "Love Song for Bobby Long" in 2004.

The incident could have been dismissed as a random awkward moment for Travolta at the 2015 Oscars, but things just got weirder.

At last year's Oscars, Travolta introduced Idina Menzel, 43, for her performance of "Let It Go" from animated film "Frozen," as the "wickedly talented Adele Dazeem." The flub went viral on social media, and show producers hoped to strike gold again on Sunday night when they paired Travolta and Menzel to present the Best Original Song award.

"Please welcome to the stage my very dear friend, Glom Gazingo," Menzel, who was the first on stage, said.

The crowd roared with amusement and applause as Travolta walked out to join Menzel. He gave her a big hug.

"I deserve that," Travolta said.

Travolta then grabbed Menzel's chin and pulled her face close to his. Stroking her chin, he cooed, "But you, you, my darling, my beautiful, my wickedly talented Idina Menzel."

"You got it, yayyy," Menzel said, visibly uncomfortable as Travolta's hand lingered on her chin.

Social media blew up as viewers shared how creepy Travolta acted with Menzel. In that moment, he became the joke of the Oscars. Memes dedicated to his weird behavior erupted online.

Travolta explained excessively touching Menzel's face during an interview at Jimmy Kimmel's Oscar post-Oscars party, saying he was suddenly told he had one minute until he was to present the award with Menzel and was rushed.

"Apparently, I played with her chin too much," Travolta said, obviously baffled by people's perception that he acted inappropriately. "... I run into Goldie Hawn. I was hugging and loving her up and forgetting I have to go do this bit."

He also took credit for Menzel's fantastic success with "Frozen" in 2014.

"She's had one of the best years of her life, and she gives me credit," he said.

Most assume he meant that as a joke.
