The Italian prosecutors in the Amanda Knox re-trial have told the courts that they want the Seattle native to serve 30 years for the murder of Merideth Kercher.

According to The Huffington Post, Knox -- who was an exchange student at the time of Kercher's murder -- was originally sentenced to 26 years for murder, plus an additional year for slander (she initially blamed a Congolese bar owner for her former roommate's murder). Prosecutor Alessandro Crini also said that Knox's boyfriend at the time, Raffaele Sollecito, should serve 26 years for his role in the murder.

CBS News is reporting that the basis for the Italian courts insistence on the retrial has to do with the facts of the case: prosecutor Alessandro Crini insisted the couple was responsible for Kercher's killing in November 2007 in Perugia. He said they both struck the victim repeatedly with two knives while another man, Rudy Guede, held her with one hand and abused her sexually with the other. Guede is serving 16 years in prison after opting for a fast-track trial.

The prosecution's theory is that Sollecito used a smaller knife to cut Kercher's bra while Knox held a larger knife, which caused the deeper wounds. Crini stressed her DNA was found between the knife's handle and blade and that this was significant evidence of "improper use."
