In a recent interview with Ryan Seacrest, Justin Bieber revealed that his upcoming album is inspired by his breakup with former girlfriend, Selena Gomez, Us Weekly reports.

"I think a lot of my inspiration comes from [Selena]," he told Seacrest. "It was a long relationship that created heartbreak and created happiness and a lot of different emotions that I wanted to write about. There's a lot of that on this album."

Bieber and Gomez began dating in 2010 and their romance was a highly publicized and dramatic on-again, off-again relationship that resulted in their split in 2013.

Following their breakup, Gomez released her heartfelt single, "The Heart Wants What it Wants," that she claims is about her former relationship with Bieber.

And though Bieber claims that his album is inspired by his former love, he has no intention of making a song that is a direct response to Gomez's single.

Bieber is currently in the studio with Kanye West who is producing his upcoming album that will feature the use of live instruments, says People.

"I've been in the studio with [Kanye] for the past month or so," Bieber revealed. "He just pushes you. He definitely wants it to be my way and my direction and he doesn't want to steal what I want. That's why artists like to go to him, because he pulls something out of you that other people don't."

In addition to working on his new album, Bieber revealed that he is also working on himself and attempting to stay out of trouble.

His first step to ensuring his well being and growth in maturity is surrounding himself with positive influences, he explained.

"You are who you surround yourself with," he said. "When people are bringing in garbage and negativity, you start picking up that energy. Now I'm surrounded by a lot of people who are pouring into my life, refueling my engine."
