Over the past six seasons of "Modern Family," we have laughed voraciously at the everyday chores that these eclectic group of family characters have to face. But in Wednesday's episode, titled "Patriot Games," we get a little dose of the overachieving adolescent rivalry that will have us stewing in comedy.

Being valedictorian for one's high school class is considered a high honor, and one worthy of getting into a great college. But, as reported by Spoilers Guide, Alex has met her match when she learns that her No. 1 competitor has ceased on the opportunity to match her achievements.

Alex (Ariel Winter) has entered into a tie for valedictorian with Sanjay and both are scheduled to share the honor at graduation. But her parents along with Sunjay's are less than thrilled with the premise. They both want their child to have the sole honor of the title, so it is agreed upon that they should have a tiebreaker.

They persuade Principal Brown (guest star Andy Daly) to let them break the tie with a particular class credit that neither have completed -- the gym grade for the one-mile run. This, of course, presents a nearly even matchup, considering it is a contest for which both have less-than-redeeming credentials. The rivalry is now set and both students' parents have entered into the competition at full-force.

In other events, Mitch (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cam (Eric Stonestreet) find themselves in a new kind of predicament as they protest against a local restaurant. Although they agree to it blindly, they fail to show enthusiasm for the event. But both, unknown to each other, are secretly excited about the event and we will eventually get to see how this revelation comically plays out within their relationship.

We will also get a glimpse at Gloria's (Sofia Vergara) struggle to attain her U.S. citizenship, but she also hits a brick wall when Javier (guest star Benjamin Bratt) shows up and makes the task more difficult.

This "Modern Family" episode is all new tonight on ABC at 9 p.m.
