“Supergirl” will be hitting small screens soon, but it has recently been compared with a “Saturday Night Live” Marvel parody video that was made for Black Widow, entitled “Black Widow: Age of Me.” Melissa Benoist, the actress who will play the titular role of Kara Zor-El, has defended the show from those who are trying to make it seem ridiculous.

The “SNL” parody was made based on the events depicted in the “Supergirl” trailer that was previously released. Although the two videos had some similarities, Benoist hints that a lot of the action-packed scenes of her show were not featured in the short sneak peek which CBS has released.

“We do not really take ourselves too seriously in that respect,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “It is a superhero show. But, I do not think that takes away from the female empowerment. Obviously, you see Kara in her work atmosphere. It resembles the ‘Black Widow parody,’ but, what you do not see is Kara kicking butt.”

As depicted in the video, Natasha Romanoff, or Black Widow, works for a fashion magazine and struggles to keep her normal life and her life as a superhero in balance. The comparison between the parody video and the original "Supergirl" trailer stems from the fact that the lives of the two superheroes are pretty similar.

Despite this, Benoist guarantees that “Supergirl” is going to show “so much more in the pilot that I think people are really going to be surprised by.”

She thinks that what makes the parody video even more hilarious is that fans have never really compared Black Widow and Supergirl side by side. “It is a girl figuring out how to become a woman,” she said. “The ‘SNL’ proof came out and all of us thought it was so hilarious. I do not think any of us expected people to compare them or put them side by side.”

The former “Glee” star is also confident that “Supergirl” will be at par with other present superhero TV series, such as “Arrow” and “The Flash,” primarily because all of the aforementioned shows have the same producers.

Apparently, “the bar is set so high with those shows” because of the presence and skills of executive producer Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg. “They have found a really good formula and a really good way of portraying heroes with heart,” she added. “I do not think we are lacking any of that in our show.”
