Guatemala and Cuba will battle to salvage their Gold Cup tournament when they face off on Wednesday.

At this point, both teams are in dire straits as far as qualification goes. Guatemala stands the best chance at making the final eight as it has one point earned from its draw with Mexico. A win would put the team on four points, eclipsing Panama as one of the top third place teams and securing a spot in the next round. If Trinidad somehow defeats Mexico by a large margin and Guatemala destroys Cuba, then the chances of finishing increase greatly.

For Cuba the situation is far more complex as the team is all but finished. A win gives it three points, an automatic tie with Panama for the final knockout spot. However, Cuba has to overcome a massive -8 goal differential; Panama drew in every single one of its games so the team has an even goal differential. The only way Cuba qualifies is by defeating Guatemala by nine or more goals.

That is unlikely to happen.

So the only team with any major stakes is Guatemala which is likely confident after shutting down the Mexicans in a 0-0 draw. The team looked vulnerable against the speedy Trinidad and Tobago in its opening defeat but certainly ramped up its physicality against Mexico in a 0-0 draw.

Cuba will play for its sense of dignity after incurring a 6-0 loss to Mexico and a 2-0 defeat against Trinidad and Tobago.

Prediction: Guatemala is likely to be the team on the front foot knowing full well that any result leads to a berth in the next round. They are also the superior squad and should by all estimates take down a punchless Cuban side. Guatemala wins 3-0.
