Johnny Depp's wife is in hot water with Australian officials over allegedly smuggling dogs.

USA Today reports Amber Heard has been charged with illegally smuggling the couple's dogs into Australia. She was charged with one count of illegally importing her two dogs, Pistol and Boo, into the country and one count of falsifying documents.

Heard is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 7 in Queensland. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $75,000 dollars. The charge of falsifying documents carries a year in prison and a fine of $7,500.

People Magazine reports this whole incident started in May when Depp failed to declare his pups to custom authorities when he came in the country to film the next "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie. Australian Minister for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce gave Depp 72 hours to remove the dogs from the country or the dogs would be euthanized.

"Just because he's Johnny Depp does not mean he's exempt from Australian law," Barnaby said. "You start letting in movie stars, even though they have been the Sexiest Man Alive twice, who come into our nation, why don't we just break the laws for everybody?"

Under Australian law, dogs are required to be quarantined for at least 10 days on arriving in the country.

But why was Heard charged but Depp wasn't? According to the prosecutors office, it was up to the prosecutors to charge Heard.

In an interview, Heard said she and her husband will avoid Australia in the future because of this incident.

"I guess everyone tries to go for their 15 minutes, including some government officials," Heard said.

Depp has not given a statement on the matter.
