A referee for a youth soccer league in Utah remains hospitalized in critical condition on Tuesday after being punched in the head by a player who got angry at the man after being penalized during a game over the weekend.

The 46-year-old man, whose name has not yet been released, was refereeing a game on the soccer field of Eisenhower Junior High School in Taylorsville, UT on Saturday morning. After giving a 17-year-old player on one of the competing teams a "yellow card" for committing a foul on the field, the teen responded by striking the ref in the head.

The man was transported from the field to a local hospital for treatment of what at first seemed only a minor injury. However, after arriving at the hospital the man's condition worsened, he lost consciousness and was admitted in critical condition for severe internal head injuries, according to reports.

The teen who allegedly committed the violent act was arrested on Monday and booked into the Salt Lake Valley Juvenile Detention Center. He is being charged on suspicion of aggravated assault. The charges could be increased in severity if the man's condition worsens.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said that the teen, whose identity has not been released, is considered a juvenile but that the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office is reviewing the case in order to decide whether he will officially be charged as an adult when and if the case goes to trial, the Salt Lake Tribune reports.
