Grand Theft Auto 5 kicks it into high gear as the game hits sales of 54 million copies on different platforms.

According to Game Rant, since the Grand Theft Auto 5's release on Xbox 360 two years ago and its subsequent launches on other platforms, the gaming favorite has been hitting milestone after milestone.

Rockstar and publisher Take Two Interactive marked its sale of 52 million copies mere months ago, and now they're celebrating another breakthrough during Take-Two's first fiscal 2016 earnings call.

This new achievement marks a new record as Grand Theft Auto 5 becomes the fourth best-selling game of all time, according to a report from Hardcore Gamer.

The groundbreaking sales of the game helped increase Take-Two's revenue to almost triple in a year, going from $151.6 million last year to $366.4 million this year. Grand Theft Auto 5 was credited for the massive gains, although there are multiple games in the company's roster, including NBA 2K15, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection and WWE 2K15.

Even the free two-part update for Grand Theft Auto Online was highlighted by the company.

Take-Two Interactive's chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick spoke up about their recent successes, citing the different games that helped propel them to greater sales.

"Our business continued its positive momentum during the fiscal first quarter, enabling Take-Two to deliver significant growth in revenue, Non-GAAP earnings and cash flow," he explained in a press statement reported by Game Rant. "These results were driven by strong consumer demand for Grand Theft Auto V, NBA 2K15 and an array of other titles, along with better-than-expected growth in recurrent consumer spending."

Undoubtedly, Grand Theft Auto 5 has earned its title as one of the most noteworthy games on the market. The game famously gained $800 million during its first day alone, and was able to hit the billion-dollar mark with ease in a few days.

It's going to be difficult to top the fifth installment of the franchise, but previous reports indicated Grand Theft Auto 6 is gearing up to be as big - or maybe even bigger - as its predecessor.

Rumors about a different approach to the highly celebrated franchise for its sixth edition have been circulating, including using the entire United States as a playing field. Hollywood couple Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes will reportedly be involved, and the six-star wanted status could also return.
