One Direction is a band that's bound to go out on top. Their plans for a final gig will certainly make their last hurrah one for the books as the boys are in talks to stage their final performance at the Super Bowl 50.

According to a report from the Daily Star, the executives at the NFL want a strong roster of performers to kick off the 50th anniversary of the league. And who better to rock the biggest, most anticipated stage in the world than One Direction, the hottest boy band at present who will be going their separate ways next year?

"NFL bosses want a superstar line-up and 1D are very much in the mix," the source told Daily Star. "They want a pop and rock mash-up and it is thought that Coldplay and Bruno Mars are in talks too."

He added, "NFL bigwigs want a one-off show that will be remembered and garner the greatest audience figures ever. Obviously the 12-minute half-time show will be worth millions in revenue, sales and downloads too. With the band finishing it would be the ultimate way for the group to say farewell to their fans."

Consistently one of the largest sporting and entertainment events in the world, NFL will be even bigger in 2016 as they celebrate their golden anniversary on Feb. 17, 2016. The Super Bowl 50 will be held at the Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., according to a report from Unreality TV.

The historical stage, which has hosted major entertainers such as Janet Jackson, Madonna and Black Eyed Peas, provides an excellent opportunity for One Direction to go out with a bang.

The band is aware of this, and a report from Hollywood Life revealed that the British boys would be eager to grab the Superbowl gig to cap off their successful career as a group.

"The Super Bowl would be the pinnacle of their career and a great placeholder for their break," an insider told Hollywood Life. "They would do it in a heartbeat."

Fans will certainly appreciate a farewell show from the hit makers, but the boys from One Direction are adamant that their hiatus does not mean the band is splitting up permanently.

Niall Horan has gone on Twitter to calm down the distressed fan base saying, "We are not splitting up, but we will be taking a well earned break at some point next year."

"It's just a break. We're not going anywhere!" Louis Tomlinson chimed in, in his Twitter account.
