While the release of Star Wars: Episode VII still seems far, far and away, many details regarding production and casting remain few and far between. However, according to Variety, the Girls star Adam Driver is rumored to become the long-awaited film's central antagonist.

Early rumors began to surface that the 30-year-old was in talks to play a role in the film, but delays set any finalizing talks back because of the actor's commitment to the HBO series. The role would require a substantial time away from other projects as the actor would be signed on for a three-picture deal.

Variety reports that Walt Disney Studios and Lucasfilms are expecting to have Driver officially signed on to the film, set for a Dec. 18, 2015 release.

The film's villain, who has yet to have an official title, will be as iconic as Lord Darth Vader himself, according to Variety.

As J.J. Abram's production is slated to begin filming at London's Pinewood Studios in April, more casting details are expected to be released sometime next month.

Picking up where Return of the Jedi left off, the seventh installment of the 40-year franchise will reunite the original trilogy's stars Mark Hammil, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford surprising their roles as Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa and Han Solo, respectively.

Other rumors surrounding the villain role included names such as Hugo Weaving, who is no stranger to playing baddies, and X-Men's Magneto, Michael Fassbender.

Driver has been receiving praise for his role on Girls and has been cast to play a role in Martin Scorsese's upcoming film Silence with Andrew Garfield and Liam Neeson. Driver is currently filming the Warner Bros. picture Midnight Special.

Abrams recently announced that the script to Episode VII, which he co-wrote with Empire Strikes Back writer Lawrence Kasdan, was finally complete and casting could begin.

Disney and Lucasfilms announced its plans for developing another trilogy in October 2012 following the $4 billion deal Disney paid to acquire George Lucas's production company and rights to the films.

Additionally, Disney is currently developing a Star Wars themed park attached to its parks and will also produce multiple television series leading up to the upcoming Episode VII release.
