The NPD Group has revealed the list of top ten best-selling video games for September 2015.

As listed on GameSpot, last month's overachievers are as follows:

1.       NBA 2K16 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)

2.       Madden NFL 16 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)

3.       Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PS4, XBO, PS3, 360)

4.       FIFA 16 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)

5.       Destiny: The Taken King (XBO, PS4, 360, PS3)

6.       Super Mario Maker (NWU)

7.       Disney Infinity 3.0 (360, NWU, XBO, PS4, PS3)

8.       Mad Max (PS4, XBO)

9.       NHL 16 (XBO, PS4, 360, PS3)

10.   Minecraft (360, PS3, XBO, PS4)

It can be noticed that four out of the top ten games belong to the sports video game genre. NPD analyst Liam Callahan quickly explained why. He said, "Thanks to the seven new sports releases launched in September 2015, the Sports super genre accounted for 32 percent of units and 39 percent of revenue for the month."

Callahan added that "NBA 2K16" had the best launch month for any NBA 2K title. The basketball simulator also had the best launch month out of all eight-generation software sports video game.

"Super Mario Maker" sat in sixth place, but that's as good as first place for Nintendo. The Wii U title is the only single platform game to make the list.

According to Nintendo Life, "Super Mario Maker" sold over 445,000 physical and OTA copies in its first three weeks. As of Oct. 19, the figure has surpassed the half-a-million mark.

Meanwhile, "Minecraft" fell to the 10th spot from its second place finish last month.

Hardware and software sales saw a considerable dip in September 2014, and this year was no different. Callahan stated that despite the year-on-year slumps, all latest-gen consoles performed relatively better in September as compared to August, on a per week basis.

The PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U experienced a double-digit increase in sales in a span of a month. It was Sony who had the bragging rights though, as "NBA 2K16," "Madden NFL 16," "The Phantom Pain" and "FIFA 16" had stronger sales on the PS4.

To that, Sony Computer Entertainment America released the following press statement:

"As we kick off the holiday season, we would like to take a moment to thank fans for making PlayStation 4 the best-selling console and #1 in software sales in September. PlayStation 4 was the number one console for 'NBA 2K16,' 'Madden NFL 16,' 'Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain' and 'FIFA 16.' Including the highly successful limited edition console bundle, PS4 also led retail sales for 'Destiny: The Taken King.'"
