In the upcoming episode of “Once Upon a Time,” Dark Emma (Jennifer Morrison) tries to turn the typically timid Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle) into a hero.

A teaser for Episode 5 of Season 5, titled “Dreamcatcher,” shows a frightful Mr. Gold offering an ominous warning, saying, "You will always lose the ones you love the most.”

As Comicbook.com reports, in Sunday's episode, some of the citizens of Storybrooke will attempt to free Merlin (Elliot Knight) from bondage, while Arthur (Liam Garrigan) would rather that the wizard not be released.

Carlyle, the 54-year-old actor of “Trainspotting" fame, plays multiple characters on the series, including the mischievous Rumpelstiltskin and his reformed counterpart Mr. Gold.

Carlyle is known, aside from his terrific range, for being particularly convincing at playing damaged souls. In an interview in The Telegraph, the actor ascribes much of his personality to a rough childhood and a harsh environment.

“The backdrop of my childhood seemed to be the back streets, the dark alleys and the rainy streets of those cities. I know every beat and rhythm of that life, which could be another reason for why I’m drawn often to dark gritty roles,” Carlyle said.

Another major factor in Carlyle’s life was the absence of his mother.

The “Once Upon a Time” star has come to peace with this early trauma, saying, “I think I came to the conclusion that some women just aren’t maternal, and my mum was one of them. I’m sure I hated her at one time, but as I’ve gone through my twenties, thirties, forties and now my fifties, I feel sorry for her more than anything because she missed out on so much. She missed out on me and, especially, she missed out on her grandchildren -- and that’s punishment enough, isn’t it?”

The next episode of “Once Upon A Time” airs Sunday, Oct. 25 on ABC.
