Motorola's Droid smartphones actually introduced the Android operating system. Now, Verizon and Motorola are creating two new models to try to bring them back to the mainstream.

Verizon will introduce two new exclusive Droid phones, the Droid Turbo 2 and the Droid Maxx 2, CNet reports. Each of these smartphones will have a unique feature that makes them worth a look.

The Droid Turbo 2 will feature a shatterproof screen that Verizon and Motorola hopes will attract customers who have dropped their phones in the past.

"The drop you hear is usually followed by the sound of tears," Motorola president Rick Osterloh said. Osterloh proved the screen was shatterproof by dropping the smartphone on a concrete block.

Since Motorola introduced the first Droid in 2009, the Android operating system has become extremely popular. Android now appears mostly on Samsung, Google Nexus and HTC One smartphones.

The exclusive deal between Verizon and Motorola for these two smartphones is now rare in today's wireless world. Smartphone makers have offered their phones across multiple carriers to increase sales.

The Droid Turbo 2 uses the "Moto Shattershield" technology and Osterloh said it was not easy to create these smartphones. A flexible display and aluminum construction allows the phone to withstand drops without having the screen crack.

Customers will be able to customize their Droid Turbo 2 with Motorola's Moto Maker feature. They can choose ballistic nylon or leather and customize the colors. Verizon said owners of the 64 GB of the Droid Turbo 2 can change the look of it every two years.

The Droid Turbo 2 will cost $25 per month for the 32 GB version or $40 per month for the 64 GB version. It will come with a 3,760 mAh battery that can be charged very quickly.

The Droid Maxx 2 will sell for $16 per month and will have long-lasting battery that can last up to two days before needing to be recharged. The Droid Maxx 2 will feature a 5.5-inch screen and a microSD slot that allows up to 128 GB of storage.

Both phones will launch on Thursday through Verizon only.
