Jose Mourinho and Chelsea endured yet another major embarrassment as the team was eliminated from the 2015-16 Football League Cup during a penalty shootout against Stoke City.

At this point in time, Mourinho and company needed to start getting a result and do their utmost to win something in what already looks like a lost season.

Looks is not even the best way to describe the situation. "Lost season" might be a massive understatement.

Chelsea currently sits 15th in the Premier League and has a 30 percent chance of reclaiming the title it fought so hard to earn in 2014-15. With only 11 points in its first 10 games, the Blues are now 11 points behind Manchester City and Arsenal; both sides are tied for the top spot.

Since 2010-11, 80 points has been the lowest total needed to win the title. However that number took place in the 2010-11 season; after that it has been 86 or bust.

Chelsea can still reach 86 points over its final 28 matches. However to do so, the team would need to win 25 of its remaining 28 games and hope that the other teams do not get 87 points. That of course would mean that Chelsea will only drop points in three of its remaining games from October through May. The team has a record of three wins, two draws and five defeats in its opening 10 games.

That is not going to happen.

So the Premier League title is out of the question at this point, especially considering the lack of convincing play overall.

So what of the FA Cup and Champions League? The former is certainly possible, but if Chelsea is going to repeat its League Cup performance, than the FA Cup bid will die a quick and bitter death.

And what of the Champions League? The team might as well put its efforts on wrapping up the easy group it was gifted in August right?

If only it was as easy as all the pundits thought. Remember when Chelsea was going to run away with 15 to 18 points against Porto, Dynamo Kiev and Maccabi Tel Aviv?

The team currently has four points and sits in third place. Of course there are two more games at home left to play and an away game against an Israeli side that has yet to score a single goal.

However, Chelsea is currently not looking like it will claim the top spot in the group. Porto has seven points and is likely to get the three points out of Kiev it needs to secure the top spot. Losing to Chelsea on the road is unlikely to push the team too far back in the standings if all holds firm and Porto picks up six points in its other two games (a likely proposition considering the teams and locations). So if Porto gets to 13 then Chelsea would need to win out to get to 13 as well and hope that its win over Porto is by a margin of two goals or better.

Chelsea has yet to string three wins together in any competition this season. Who is ready to bet they pull it off in the UCL?

So if Chelsea somehow gets out of the group (again, very likely) it is likely as a second place team. Who fancies this team against the likes of Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Wolfsburg, Atletico Madrid or Juventus (assuming those group leaders remain)?

No one.

Jose Mourinho insists on remaining at Chelsea. It no longer makes sense considering the team's current situation: a lost season.
