The St. Louis Rams have signed five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Wes Welker to a one-year, $1.8 million contract, per NFL.com. He played with the Denver Broncos last season, appearing in seven games and posting career lows in almost all statistics.

The report noted that Welker's contract has more than $700,000 worth of incentives plus his base salary. His incentives will be based on his playing time and catches. He has a career reception of 890 for 9,822 yards and 50 touchdowns, per Pro Football Reference.

The 34-year-old worked out for the Rams on Monday. St. Louis made it official and posted a picture of Welker signing the contract on their Twitter account.

The Rams signed the three-time NFL reception leader because of the suspension of wideout Stedman Bailey, as reported by Yahoo! Sports. The 24-year-old was given a four-game ban by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy on Monday. This is not Stedman's first suspension due to substance abuse as he was also suspended in the first four games of the 2014 season, per ESPN. The player was caught using performance-enhancing drugs.

NFL.com also noted that St. Louis worked out Hakeem Nicks and Vincent Brown on Monday but chose to sign the veteran Welker. The 34-year-old last appeared in a game against the Oakland Raiders in week 17 of last season. His career was in jeopardy because of successive concussions he suffered while with the Broncos.

"We've done physicals, we've done everything. I think he'll eventually move some chains for us," Rams coach Jeff Fisher said.

FOX Sports reported earlier in the year that Welker contemplated retirement during the offseason after his production decreased and years of head injuries. Bleacher Report noted that if he retired, Welker would be remembered as one of the best receivers of the 2000s and one of the best slot receivers of all time.

The report added that along with Rod Smith, they are the only two players considered as the best wide receivers ever that went undrafted. Welker signed as an undrafted free agent with the Chargers in 2004 but made his name as a member of the New England Patriots from 2007 to 2012, where he was selected five times in the Pro Bowl and a four-time All-Pro selection.

He is just 10 receptions and 178 yards away from being a member of the 900 receptions and 10,000 yards club. The Rams will face the Chicago Bears on Nov. 15 at 12 p.m. CST.
