Fox has renewed "American Horror Story for a sixth season.

The news is not much of a surprise especially given the fact that it is the highest rated TV show on Fox. The Hollywood Reporter has stated that the network ordered a sixth installment of the Ryan Murphy-Brad Falchuk anthology series. The news source also noted that the series would premiere in 2016 but no specific time period was given.

"With the sixth installment coming next year, American Horror Story has unquestionably joined the ranks of television's landmark series," said FX Networks CEO John Landgraf. "From Murder House to Hotel, AHS has pioneered a new television form, as well as becoming FX's highest-rated show, while also pushing every conceivable boundary of creative excellence and audacity."

There is very little known about the sixth season but it was revealed that creator Ryan Murphy approached Lady Gaga about returning to the series. No word on whether she has signed on but the singer-turned-actress has been very popular in the fifth season.

"American Horror Story" has not only been successful with its ratings, but it has also been critically acclaimed. To date the first four installments of the FX series earned 71 Emmy Award nominations and 13 wins. Among the winners were Jessica Lange, who did not return to the current season "Hotel."

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the current season, "Hotel," is pacing ahead of all prior installments and is currently 7 percent ahead of "Freak Show" among adults 18-49.

Murphy is best known for his work on "Scream Queens" and "Glee," and he recently directed the EMMY and Golden Globe award-winning film "The Normal Heart."

"American Horror Story" also stars Matt Bomer, Sarah Paulson, Cheyenne Jackson, Evan Peters, Denis O'Hare, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts and Frances Conroy.

The series airs on Wednesday nights at 10pm on FX.
