Jennifer Lopez will be honored by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) group for the work she does in pursuit of equality for LGBT people, according to an announcement this week.

Instead of just talking about equality, Lopez has made it a priority to make sure LGBT people get a seat at the table, too; the American Idol host is also an executive produer for The Fosters, a TV show about lesbians that was said to be inspired by J-Lo's late aunt, according to CBS News. Lopez has a large following -- with 1.8 million Instagram followers -- and she has been able to use that as a platform to help promote equality.

"When it comes to gay marriage, I just believe in love," Lopez, who is now 44 years old, said to GLAAD "I believe that when two people find each other and love each other, they should be able to spend their lives together with all the same benefits and privileges as everyone."

The gay rights group made an announcement on Monday detailing why they decided J-Lo should be the recipient of the Vanguard Award this time around.

"Through her work to bring 'The Fosters' to life and by consistently speaking out as a powerful ally, Jennifer Lopez has not only sent a message of acceptance to LGBT adults and young people, but inspired new support for our community among her many fans around the globe," GLAAD CEO and President Sarah Kate Ellis said about the decision to pick Lopez. "Family is about love, and that's a message Jennifer has shared with millions through her groundbreaking work on 'The Fosters.'"

The annual GLAAD Media Awards ceremony will be taking place on April 12 in Los Angeles.
