"Top Gun" is about to make its way back to the big screen, and Val Kilmer may be back on board.

With "Top Gun 2" in the planning stages, it appears as if most, if not all, of the original stars may be returning as well. According to an article on Variety, Kilmer has been offered the chance to reprise his role in the film.

The actor reportedly accepted before even looking at the script, but has now backpedaled slightly on his involvement.

The idea of a sequel to "Top Gun" has been floating around Hollywood now for quite some time. Way back in 2012, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and star Tom Cruise were working out the finer details of the project when tragedy struck.

The project was put on hiatus following the death of the original film director Tony Scott, who died of an apparent suicide.

The next year, Bruckheimer commented on the project, confirming that the sequel had simply stalled for a moment. He said they details were still being worked out and there was nothing to announce at that time.

Kilmer's announcement on Facebook that he had been offered the role gave the project a much-needed injection of energy.

I just got offered #topgun2 - not often you get to say "yes" without reading the script..."It's starring Gene...

The actor later edited that announcement, saying he may have been a little premature, given the project still has many details to work out before production.

But Kilmer did confirm that the project is still a go and would eventually be making its way into production. The movie will also star Gene Hackman and will directed by Francis Ford Coppola.

There have been no announcements from Cruise, but all indications point toward his involvement.

Producer and Skydance CEO David Ellison also confirmed that project is still moving forward, hinting at the modernization of the new film.

"It is very much a world we live in today where it's drone technology and fifth generation fighters," Ellison said.
